A Tattered Page | August 2030, The Earth Men

Tonight I wish to share another installment featuring A Tattered Page*; a special Curse event that combines the love of books with the joy of SL creation. Designers read the chosen book, find inspiration from the words within and create something that visually represents a citation from the book, which they include with their item. This round takes place January 7-31.

The Martian Chronicles is a collection of short science fiction stories written by Ray Bradbury in the 1950s. The chapters are broken up into individual tales that weave together over the span of twenty-seven years. It tells the story of the colonization of Mars by humans who are seeking a better life from a war torn and tattered out earth. Upon landing, they are thrilled to find the planet is inhabitable, in fact it is inhabited by people much like themselves. Even though the Martians look and talk like humans there is just something that is not quite right as the second expedition soon discovers...

"The little town was full of people drifting in and out of doors, saying hello to one another, wearing golden masks and blue masks and crimson masks for pleasant variety, masks with silver lips and bronze eyebrows, masks that smiled or masks that frowned, according to the owners’ dispositions."

--Bradbury, Ray. The Martian Chronicles (p. 28).

It is August 2030 when the second expedition lands on Mars, many years after the first expedition mysteriously disappeared. (You can read about that story here). The four astronauts are amazed to find a town filled with people that look almost like them with darker golden skin that speak the same language as they do. Upon meeting a Martian, they are shocked that their declaration of being Human does not cause a stir or even seem to be a remarkable thing to these people. It is as if Humans showing up is an every day occurrence. They are directed by impatient and busy Martians to one man in town who will talk to them. In frustration the captain of the space ship stops a child playing on the street on his way to see the man about being the first to visit Mars from Earth.

"The little girl disengaged one hand without thinking about it, and clapped an expressionless golden mask over her face. Then she pulled forth a golden spider toy and dropped it to the ground while the captain talked on."
-- Bradbury, Ray. The Martian Chronicles (p. 29).

“We’re Earth Men,” he said. “Do you believe me?”
“Yes.” The little girl peeped at the way she was wiggling her toes in the dust.
“Fine.” The captain pinched her arm, a little bit with joviality, a little bit with meanness to get her to look at him. “We built our own rocket ship. Do you believe that?”
The little girl dug in her nose with a finger. “Yes.”
“And— take your finger out of your nose, little girl— I am the captain, and—”
“Never before in history has anybody come across space in a big rocket ship,” recited the little creature, eyes shut.
“Wonderful! How did you know?”
“Oh, telepathy.” She wiped a casual finger on her knee.
“Well, aren’t you just ever so excited?” cried the captain. “Aren’t you glad?”
“You just better go see Mr. Iii right away.” She dropped her toy to the ground. “Mr. Iii will like talking to you.” She ran off, with the toy spider scuttling obediently after her.

-- Bradbury, Ray. The Martian Chronicles (pp. 28-29).

As all other Martians the captain has talked to the child also acts unimpressed and urges him on to see the gentleman they were directed to. Deflated they journey on to discover they are not what they think they are and insanity takes on a new meaning. To know if they are ever believed you will need to read the book...you may never look at reality the same.
