A Tattered Page | August 2030: The Earthmen and April 2036: Usher II

Well everyone, we have reached the end, this is the last post from me featuring A Tattered Page till the next round in March. For those who are just joining us, A Tattered Page is a special Curse event that combines the love of books with the joy of SL creation. Designers read the chosen book, find inspiration from the words within and create something that visually represents a citation from the book, which they include with their item. This round ends January 31.

The Martian Chronicles is a collection of short science fiction stories written by Ray Bradbury in the 1950s. The chapters are broken up into individual tales that weave together over the span of twenty-seven years. It tells the story of the colonization of Mars by humans who are seeking a better life from a war torn and tattered out earth. In this post I am touching on two different chapters of the story.

The first presentation is from August 2030: The Earthmen. I talked about this selection in a post earlier this month, but I loved this chapter of the book so much I couldn't resist doing a few more photos to represent it. In this selection, we join the second landing after they have made it to Mr. Xxx, the man they were report to because they were from earth. Mr. Xxx is a most remarkable character in how fascinated he is by the Earth-men and their existence...

"It was noon. The day was very hot when they reached the rocket. “So.” The psychologist walked up to the ship and tapped it. It gonged softly. “May I go inside?” he asked slyly. “You may.” Mr. Xxx stepped in and was gone for a long time."

" The psychologist emerged from the ship after half an hour of prowling, tapping, listening, smelling, tasting. The psychologist shut his eyes and scratched his nose. “Yes, yes, what a lovely insanity. Metal, rubber, gravitizers, foods, clothing, fuel, weapons, ladders, nuts, bolts, spoons. Ten thousand separate items I checked on your vessel. Never have I seen such a complexity. There were even shadows under the bunks and under everything! Such concentration of will! And everything, no matter how or when tested, had a smell, a solidity, a taste, a sound! Let me embrace you!”

“This is the most incredible example of sensual hallucination and hypnotic suggestion I’ve ever encountered. I went through your ‘rocket,’ as you call it.” He tapped the hull. “I hear it. Auditory fantasy.” He drew a breath. “I smell it. Olfactory hallucination, induced by sensual telepathy.” He kissed the ship. “I taste it. Labial fantasy!” He shook the captain’s hand. “May I congratulate you? You are a psychotic genius!"
-- Bradbury, Ray. The Martian Chronicles (p. 39).

My second presentation is from the April 2036: Usher II. It is a tale of a man gone mad over the censorship and destruction of all things imaginary. He recreated Poe's House of Usher to throw a glorious party for the Society for the Prevention of Fantasy.  The visual details of this chapter were amazing to read -- to tie it all together into one house. I wish I could have come up with a better representation for this selection because it is worthy of so much more. It is a chapter you will  need to read to fully comprehend its magnificence. Until you do, I leave you this one small teaser....

"Guests poured from the booths, transformed from one age into another, their faces covered with dominoes , the very act of putting on a mask revoking all their licenses to pick a quarrel with fantasy and horror. The women swept about in red gowns, laughing. The men danced them attendance. And on the walls were shadows with no people to throw them, and here or there were mirrors in which no image showed. Eminent, eminent people, one and all, members of the Society for the Prevention of Fantasy, advocators of the banishment of Halloween and Guy Fawkes, killers of bats, burners of books, bearers of torches; good clean citizens , every one, who had waited until the rough men had come up and buried the Martians and cleansed the cities and built the towns and repaired the highways and made everything safe."
-- Bradbury, Ray. The Martian Chronicles (p. 174).
