Adventure 101: The Order of Avalon, an interactive adventure role-play community

Good evening everyone!   I have been wanting to get out more and do things in second life. I mean don't get  me wrong, I LOVE taking pretty photos all gussied up in various role-play outfits. It's probably one of my most favorite things to do (play dress up), but I get a bit bored sometimes. Soooooo... when I was told of a scripted role play sim, my interest perked up. I love scripted quests..I love dressing up. It's the perfect opportunity to get off my platform - to do something and take pretty photos! Win-Win!

What is Avalon Island?
Avalon Island is home to a many prong venture of fabulous fantasy role-play designs and scripted-quests/role-play adventures. Upon teleporting into the Avalon Sim, you land in front of Avalon Design, Avalon Forge and Completely oBVious main stores. I have not yet blogged Avalon Designs or the Avalon Forge, but you probably have seen several of Completely oBVious' items before. All three stores are brimming full of amazing medieval role-play goodies, such as armor, weapons, furnishings, fashion and full avatars. I totally recommend wandering upstairs to the Avalon Forge and checking out their shoulder dragons.. omg.. so cute!  I will definitely be back for one of those on payday! All three stores have amazing free gifts, you may have to join their store group to pick the gifts up. There may be a fee to join, even so, .they are worth it.

You will also see a portal to the Realm of Avalon, the Medieval Fantasy Role-play grounds, which is home to the "Order of Avalon"Before you take the portal you need to know a few things about the role-play community.

1. Read and follow the Constitution
The constitution lays out all the guidelines you will need to follow in-order to participate in the community. It lets you know who is in charge and who to seek out help as you go through the quests. You can enter the portal before you read the constitution, just make it a priority once you are there. You can read the Constitution on the official site, on the Bulletin Board in the Avalon Castle Courtyard, or from the welcome folder you will receive upon entry.

2.  There is a Dress Code.
All are required to wear a form of Medieval clothing. You may be any race you like. Full animal avatars do not have to  wear clothing as long as there is no nudity. If you do not have Medieval clothing, they have provided a note card in the welcome folder with some very handy links to some stores with free clothing for men and women. There are also, several outfits just past the entrance to the landing point in the castle courtyard. The only place on the sim non-medieval wear is excused is the Avalon’s Main Stores, since some people only come to the sim to shop.

3.  Photography is Okay.
That's right, my dear photographer friends, we are welcome as long as we follow the rules. Though there are several places you will want to beware, because they are either off-limits or will kill you... The tower castle and rounded building are home to the Lord and Lady and the Knight's hall. Those are invite only areas, respect the no trespassing request. The other is the dragon... beware the dragon for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup! If you take photos be sure to share them on the Avalon Flickr Pool.

3.  There is a HUD for the quests.
Even though you can wander and join the role-play community for free, if you want to participate in the quest lines you will need to purchase a HUD for 500 Lindens. The HUD is available for purchase at the Avalon Castle at the start point for the first quest.

Okay now that you have the basics down, and hopefully dressed appropriately, click the portal to begin your adventure!  Once you enter the portal you will find yourself at the mainland of Avalon Island on the edge of a broken bridge facing a castle with guards at the door. This area is known as Avalon Castle. It is the information HUB for adventurers.

Do not rush but take your time and read your chat. Touch the rotating crystal to join the Avalon in-world group, it is free to join. You can ask any questions you have there or just chat with other members of the group for fun. Click the other Crystal for a landmark.

Stop at the Guards and read what they say in chat. They are interactive. If you type their name they will talk to you offering you advice and help. If any of the words in their dialogue have [brackets] around them they are query words you can use to get more information on the topics they offer.

Upon entry into the castle courtyard you will have several options. First, go to the left and read the constitution if you have not  done so yet. Next, pick up a free Medieval outfit, if you are not dressed to code..  Also to the right is a red throne.. (don't sit in it...no really..don't do it.. don't say I didn't warn you...). If you click the photo behind the throne  you will get a framed picture and a note card explaining how to become "The Legend of Avalon". The title award comes with a flying dragon mount and a flight license for the sim. There are some pretty snazzy looking dragon mounts to chose from too! In the very  back is the start to the Avalon Catacombs quest line.

The Avalon Catacombs is an adventure RPG, featuring a lot of scripted puzzles, mysteries, dangers, and rewards. There are some fabulous treasures to be found down in the Catacombs; but beware, there are many ways to die. Are you up to the task of defeating the Dragon and earning the title of Dragonslayer? Complete the Catacombs to have access to the second quest.

The Avalon Tales of Magic is the second quest in the Avalon quest series, the Tales of Magic is a more diverse and exploratory quest than the Catacombs. Tales of Magic will have you seeking out past mysteries of the Catacombs, searching the village and island for clues and exploring the mysterious dungeon beneath the ruins.

There is still plenty to do if quests are not for you....

If you are the type to prefer finding a romantic place to dance with your partner, then you will love the beautiful open-air ballroom. A perfect place to have a romantic date. Or if you prefer a more secluded spot, dance crystals are scattered all over the Island, you are sure to find the perfect dance spot if you look around a bit. If you are the more social type, there are regularly scheduled events you can attend to make friends and kick back  your heels and relax at. You can find more information in the group notices or on the Order of Avalon Facebook page. Be sure to support them by liking the page.

If you the type that likes to hang out bantering around with friends, next to the Avalon Castle there is a wonderful tree enclosed gathering area featuring a large bonfire and tree stumps for social gatherings. There are also dance crystals so that your Fae friends can dance to their hearts contents. We know how they love to dance.

For those who like a bit of a challenge there are two interesting puzzles by the Village to try out. A Log Maze and a Rope Maze. If you complete them you receive a treasure at the end.  They both look to be quite challenging. I know with my "walking" issues -- trouble just walking a straight line -- I will be trying for hours on them.

For those who love taking photos there are some great spots to explore and put your photographic skills to work. Be sure to entertain yourself for a few on the gallows. They are right next to the village entrance. Remember those no-trespassing zones -- the round dome building and castle in this image are those.

The Village is considered a major gathering place on Avalon Island. The Tavern is decked out to entertain with several fun gaming tables along with a fine selection of drinks to raise the spirits of you and your friends. I recommend trying the Avalon Ale. You can get yourself a bottle of it by clicking the bottle dispenser on the bar. Careful not to fall down too much.

After you have yourself a few drinks at the tavern, you can get your bravery up to go for  a Griffin rideAvalon is quite beautiful from the sky. I believe you need to be a member of the group to ride it.

I can't remember where I saw that.. I could be mistaken though, but not sure.. I think it was a guard who told me that.. could be just had to have that for the chicken parachute ride too. I am not sure. I will let that adventure of finding out be all yours.

If you have any questions at all, there are several handy online status boards around the Island to help you figure out who to contact with questions or issues. I spent the better part of my day there wandering around trying stuff out. I have to say what I experienced left me smiling, wanting to go back for more. I did not get too far into the quest as I ran out of time in the day, but what I did do was fun. The puzzles and riddles challenging but not so much you are left frustrated.

Everyone I talked with in the community were friendly and willing to help out. They offered several tips on how to do things or what to check out. Not once did I get challenged asking what I was doing, even when I was just standing around blogging. So if you are looking for a friendly role-play community to join. I highly recommend checking out The Order of Avalon. I will definitely be going back.
