Women's Fashion: Little Bo-Peep

Little Bo Peep has long been one of my favorite nursery rhymes.  I realized as I pondered it as I made these photos this evening. I had never heard the full version, so I decided to take a little time this evening to look up the full version and discovered it doesn't sound so innocent at all. In fact, like most nursery rhymes, it sounds a bit dark toward the end when it is bringing home the moral lesson. The earliest printed version of Little Bo-Peep appeared in 1810 but it is considered a verbal lesson passed down the eras from parents to children as far back as the 16th century. It would seem the original phrase "stand as lil' bo-peep" was to describe a form of punishment of being stood in a pillory, also known as the stocks, as a form of public humiliation for being irresponsible.

Little Bo peep has lost her sheep
And doesn't know where to find them.
Leave them alone and they'll come home,
Bringing their tails behind them.
Little Bo peep fell fast asleep
And dreamt she heard them bleating,
But when she awoke, she found it a joke,
For they were all still fleeting.
Then up she took her little crook
Determined for to find them.
She found them indeed, but it made her heart bleed,
For they left their tails behind them.
It happened one day, as Bo peep did stray
Into a meadow hard by,
There she espied their tails side by side
All hung on a tree to dry.
She heaved a sigh, and wiped her eye,
And over the hillocks went rambling,
And tried what she could,
As a shepherdess should,
To tack again each to its lambkin.

I found the part about the tails hanging on the tree to dry particularly disturbing. There seems to be much discussion on when the rhyme first occurred but none of the sites I read said what the meaning behind the tale really was. Usually nursery rhymes were a way to express political duress or make fun of a political figure of the time but this one does not reference anyone. So perhaps it truly is just a morbid tale of a shepherdess turning her back not paying attention and the poor little sheep's tails get cut off by some cruel person and pinned to a tree.

But since shame and humiliation is a primary point to the rhyme I think it probably is in reference to some obscure official whom time has erased from the history books. They probably tried to reach too far over their station and had their hand slapped hard by the superior ranking and hence the cutting off of the tail in shame. I did find a expanded version of the Little Bo-peep rhyme in a story form by L. Frank Baum. I think he did a nice job of turning the short lyrics into a nice moral story explaining the tails on the tree quite well. Even though it had no historical weight in the back ground of what the poem actually meant. If you wish a bit of entertainment, I recommend giving it a read.

Anyway, I know this story don't have much to do with second life but I found it to be interesting nonetheless. For full details on what is in my photos and what I really think of it, see the shopping list below.
