A Tattered Page | 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Tonight's presentation brings you the first installment featuring Round 3 of A Tattered Page. ATP is  a quarterly Second Life event based on a book. A real book...not a movie! The book used for inspiration, everyone involved had to read the story and interpret it with their designs/blog posts. The exclusive items designed by the participating designers will be available at their stores and the ATP Library between March 7th - 31.

This round is centered around 20,000 leagues under the sea by Jules Verne written in 1870. It is regarded as one of the greatest sci-fiction novels of its time and is considered to be a must read now by many. I myself did not fall in-love with the story and did not quite get what was so wonderful about it. I think that, perhaps, since the book was originally written in French I may have gotten my hands on a bad translation. I have read that there are version where the translator has cut whole sections from the book considering it too drab to reprint...talk about taking liberties!

The impression of the I came away with was a tale of under-water travel and the classification of sea-life. So given this doubt I went and read several white-papers on the novel, trying to understand why it did not wow me like it does most other readers. It still is a mystery to me why anyone likes this book. But I did not let that discourage me or stop me from having a lot of fun coming up with a creative way to blog about the book while showcasing all the great items the designer's created. Let me tell you a bit about the story...a lot more happened than just sailing around the ocean...and looking at fish.

Our story is set in 1866 and narrated by Professor Pierre Aronnax, a renown oceanographer. He begins the tale by sharing how the world is captivated by tale of a mysterious monster prowling the oceans destroying ships and disrupting trade. It is considered by many to be a giant narwhal (that's a whale with the unicorn horn in the middle of its forehead) 350 yards long (that's almost three football fields, I think).

Professor Aronnax, is invited by the US Government to join an expedition on the USS Abraham Lincoln to seek out the creature and remove it from the ocean as a threat. After months of chasing across the ocean they finally encounter the giant creature and discover they can not match it in speed or fierceness..It fact it cripples The USS Abraham Lincoln and knocks Professor Aronnax, his servant, Conseil and Ned Land, a professional Canadian Harpooner, in to the ocean.

Instead of meeting their fate in the dark depths of the ocean, they are instead rescued by Captain Nemo in his submarine called the Nautilus. Which turns out to be the monster they seek. Captain Nemo gives them the choice of drowning or joining his crew, never to see land again. They, of course, chose life and joined his ship as reluctant guests. They travel the seven seas, exploring and watching the wonderful world under the waters. During which they hunt in underwater forests, get chased by primitive people, view the lost city of Atalanta, fish for pearls, discover hidden treasures left behind by men in sunken ships, get encased in ice, slaughter a large number of animals and discover that the mysterious Captain Nemo is not as anti-humanity as he first seems.

If you wish to find out what type of man Capetian Nemo is and the purpose of his submarine you will need to read the book  yourself. You may be one of the lucky who fall in love with the amazingly painted underwater worlds. I did enjoy learning about the sea life and the many processes of cultivating pearls.

The bands are not changeable via the hud but if you are confident with your skills in editing you can tint it via the build menu. ✫ AleyMart | The Sea Serpent MK5 Submarine | Free
This cute little seahorse submersible is 32 prims and free on the Marketplace. I found it on display at the little village I took photos at. But you can get your own along with a lot of other interesting seaside pieces.

Poses & Photo Location:

✫ Poses were created using AO or just standing around. My pose HUD would not work as I did not have it loaded before I teleported in and I was too lazy to leave and come back.

✫ Maveryck Breen is one of the best representations of an Italian sea village on the grid. This mixture of ancient and modern is magic for all people who love photography or just wandering through coastal villages. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/SOLARIA/194/238/25
